The risks of fitting your own car battery

Mistakes can often be made when changing your own car battery.

Car batteries can generally last for five years provided they are given proper maintenance. Its longevity is however also dependent on other factors such as the climate, the vehicles operation, how you use your vehicle (start regularity & distance travelled). Overcharging or undercharging the battery can also cause premature failure.

Before you consider doing it yourself, think of the following :
Do I have the necessary safety gear ?
Am i strong enough to lift the battery out and a new on in ?
Am I technically savvy to complete this ?
Do I have the necessary tools and devices ?
Am i prepared to accept the consequences if things go wrong ?
Is it just easier to get it done by the experts ?

Firstly, using a voltmeter, test the battery voltage, then start the car and test that the alternator is charging the battery correctly. Often people replace a battery due to a faulty alternator. If you have decided that it is your battery, then ensure you have a memory minder that ensures your vehicle retains its electronics and data before removing the old battery. The biggest risk with changing over a car battery is when trying to disconnect the dead battery in the wrong order. Before changing your car battery, you should ensure that the new battery you are replacing it with is fully charged. Then start with disconnecting the negative cable first followed by the positive cable. Undo any of the hold down clamps/brackets and ensure they are well clear of the battery terminals to avoid an accidental short. Be very careful not to drop or misplace the nuts. Lift the dead battery by removing it in an upright position. This is to prevent its acidic solution from leaking out. Respect the weight of the product when lifting as often its in an awkward position and can easily cause an injury to your back or hands. Place the old battery in a safe place to avoid contact with acid residue. You can then place the new battery at the position of the former one.

There are many types and methods to utilize a second battery and how to charge them. Camping installations, 4WD or Trade utilitie orientated DC/DC power needs are similar in the way products are selected and installed.

The first decision that needs to be focused on, is, what will be the power demands of your best thoughts, wants and needs. Some travellers will require a microwave oven where others may only need to run a small fridge/freezer. Tradies may want to charge their battery-operated tools or run electric tools.

The battery size and chemistry are very important as not having enough power will defeat the point of the setup to begin with. Do we require, only one 100AH battery or do we need a larger capacity? Amp Hour capacity will depend on your requirements, which will determine 1 or 2 auxillary batteries which will also depend on the size and space you wish to fit them. Once the decision has been made, the batteries need to be kept charged at the most optimal way. This brings into question how we drive the vehicle. If very short trips are driven, for example 20 minutes, followed by a long stay of over 8 hours using battery power, a DC/DC charger may not be the best way to charge your storage batteries. A solar setup, whether it be a solar blanket or fixed panels may be a better solution. If, on the other hand, long 5 hours plus drives are planned, followed by overnight only stays between drives, a DC/DC charging system will be the most practical option. Early model vehicles without a smart charger, can simply have a VRS “Voltage sensitive relay” installed between the starting battery and the storage batteries, making it a very inexpensive addition to your rig.

Should you have a late model, you may have a “smart alternator”, which requires the intervention of a DC/DC unit to assist the Alternator to recognize the send storage battery to send a charge to it. Either way, knowing your batteries carry a full charge after a long drive is reassuring. Most of the mid-range products will have Lithium and solar recognition, making it even easier to create your own custom requirement for your storage battery charging comfort.

It is a very tailor-made option as what is best and speaking to your battery specialist is always best practice. 20 Amp- 40Amp DC/DC chargers for AGM batteries and anything over 40Amp to 60Amp for Lithium batteries could be required for the best results for charging while driving. Battery case size often is a factor depending on space available, and for very tight installations, Slimline batteries have their place in modern tightly packed situations, i.e. you can fit them behind the back seat of twin cab utilities.

How to store your battery

What should you do with your battery if you don’t use it very often ?

All rechargeable batteries need external charging. All chemistries, makes and models require attention when stored or not active for extended periods of time. Starting batteries may be left unattended, either in a vehicle’s battery compartment or on a shelf for as long as 12 weeks before requiring a charge. The natural chemistry of batteries causes a sulphation process to develop particularly when the battery becomes more in a discharged state. Some technologies such as AGM batteries can be left as long as 12-18 weeks due to the absorbed Glass Mat material between the lead plates inside the battery construction slowing decay. The best practice for these types of batteries, is to place on a 240V charger overnight at the prescribed intervals (normally noted on the battery itself). When applying this method, your investment will be extended 2 to 3 times than if left in a discharged state. It is possible for a battery to expire to the point of non-recovery if left unattended too long, and often the local warranty protections do not apply to abused or neglected purchases. We experience this type of failure the most with Motorcycle batteries and Marine batteries. A flat unused battery is always the responsibility of the purchaser and advice should always be sort as to the best way to store your battery before a stale position develops. Marine and Motorcycles are often only used seasonally perhaps for just 3 months a year which means the battery is discharging and sulphating for 9 months.

Lithium Batteries need a different approach. Once charged, the Battery Management System (BMS) will not require 240 volt storage top ups regularly. It is best to place a fully charged Lithium battery in storage and check the voltage periodically, and charge with a compatible Lithium charger only when some voltage drop occurs. If The Lithium battery goes flat or the BMS puts the battery to sleep, take the unit to an approved Battery Specialist like us. This way, you are sure not to harm the Lithium battery, and have the best chance of the full recovery of your battery system.

We often forget about the dozens of batteries that improve our lives. Whether it is the battery in our Smart Phones, Video Cameras, SLR Cameras and remote controls, anything that has a screen or a display to read. When left with charging, these appliances fail because of their batteries failing due to lack of service. Dual Battery systems differ depending on the application, your make and model and what you are trying to achieve.

With the advent of almost limitless accessories available now, the need to place a secondary battery is now commonplace and the ability place them almost anywhere has so many options.

The simplest way is to place an Cycling battery in a battery box somewhere convenient. For example, in the rear of any vehicle, at the very front or back of the boat, in caravan storage areas, etc. Whether it be a SUV, Twin cab or Utility vehicle or large 4WD, we now can provide more power than ever before. This can be made fixed or portable so you can move it from vehicle to camp to boat, or anywhere else you may need portable power.

Fixed mountings are common, and there are three main technologies for cycling - Lead Acid, ADM/VRLA, Lithium. They vary in price and all have different features and benefits but like many products, you get what you pay for. The options for position range from under bonnet, behind rear seats (slimline concealed), box mounting in open areas are all available for every customer need and imagination. Amperage sizes are as varied as the types and shapes of batteries. Power being available at the flick of a switch to operate everything from portable power tool chargers, kettles, coffee machines, phone/computer chargers and lighting for the serious camper. The number of Amp Hours needed is only limited to the amount of power and space you require and have the budget for. You can determine this by working out your accessory draws and running times.

There are also two main types Voltage Sensitive Relays (VRS) and DC - DC chargers. The VRS is a battery isolation unit that allows a charge to the storage battery but prevents the drainage of the primary battery. This method is economical and suited to earlier model vehicle configurations pre- 2013, while the DC to DC electric packages are more suited to vehicles above 2013 with a modern smart charging system which requires more encouragement for the electrical system to recognise the second battery and charge it. Although both systems can be fitted by the DIYérs, care should be taken with the modern vehicle electrical system and the sensitive components that control the cars management charging controls. Tampering in this area can cause major damage and be extremely costly to repair if an incorrect connection is made. Always seek professional advice if unsure of any step in all wiring procedures or get us to specify and install a Dual Battery System for you and do it right the first time.

Solar panel or blanket combinations are becoming popular with their ease of connections to enable a constant charge to satisfy all configurations. Whether stand alone or through a DC to DC charger, the solar panel produces great charging potential while the engine is on or off. For stand-alone solar charging setups, a regulator is necessary to prevent to higher voltage entering the battery being charged preventing over charging damage.

HOW LONG DOES A VEHICLE BATTERY LAST AND HOW DO WE ACHIEVE MAXIMUM VALUE FOR THE CUSTOMER:

Today’s modern maintenance free starting battery should last anywhere from 3 to 5 years, depending on how it is used, stored and maintained.

A car battery should easily exceed its performance expectations and warranty term when a few basic house keeping rules are followed :
1) most starting batteries are sealed maintenence free (SMF) so no topping up of electrolyte levels are necessary.
2) SMF batteries needs little to no maintenance when it has been installed correctly apart from cleaning the cable terminals and securing battery mounting to avoid shaking.
3) Complete an electrical check on the alternator and starter motor to make sure the battery is receiving the correct charging input. Overcharging or undercharging can cause premature failure of the battery even though its a fault of the cars electrical system. Batteries are often misdiagnosed due to this issue and often the battery is blamed unnecessarily.
4) Keep the battery charged particularly if the vehicle is not used that often (part time cars, motorbikes, boats). Keeping the battery charged using an appropriate trickle charger is recommended.

Batteries are like many products - you generally get what you pay for. They come with 1 year, 2 year and 3 year warranty so the longer the warranty, the higher the quality and the longer life.

Motorcycle and Marine batteries can greatly have its life expectancy increased if it has a regular trickle charge when parked up. Cycling batteries are also quite easy to reduce the battery life expectation or even damage the battery internals with charging neglect. In our hustle and bustle world, we often suffer from “out of sight, out of mind” when it comes to charging batteries. Batteries are sometimes located in boxes, under seats or bed frames and in cupboards. While they are in use and getting a Solar or electrical AC charge, in general, they are very happy and will perform as intended, giving many years of faithful service. The deuteriation starts when the cycling battery is neglected by being either stored partially charged or left for an extended time in a discharged state, unused or subserviced by charging, often resulting in the loss of amperage capacity, making it unusable for the battery’s original intention. This almost always requires replacement well before the customers expectation. Education to rectify the early demise can be as simple as to suggest a charge of at least every 12 weeks while not in use using a quality charger. A trickle charge could be another suggestion where the environment allows. Battery life expectations of up to 3-7 years life is not unreasonable should proper maintenance schedules be applied.

Lithium Batteries are different in composition and act, and store differently. Rather than a full maintain or trickle charge, because of its internal “BMS” Battery management system, Lithium batteries have been found to appreciate a full charge and not require constant top ups while in storage. It is still recommended to check them while in storage but only a maintenance charge is required when voltage has dropped through drainage or excessive time without use. Lithium generally allows for deeper discharge without damaging the internals which is a key feature of this technology.

The modern SMF starting battery, no matter what the application, is highly reliable and will perform long after its warranty period if looked after. The days of adding water or electrolyte is a thing of the past. Batteries for under bonnet use, high-capacity use are all factored into the modern car or accessory end user.
